Mathias Skaarup - Scum of Skiing

Denmark | Active: 2021-present | Known for: Bungee Breakers street-ski films, documentary direction | Current: Director and producer

Mathias Skaarup Schmidt is a Danish director and producer whose documented place in freeskiing is behind the camera, not in a verified contest record. The credits also separate him from Scum of Skiing: Promised Land (2022) names Skaarup and Jakob Ebskamp as filmmakers, while Scum of Skiing is part of the skier cast. Shot on winter street missions in Umeå and Sundsvall from late December 2021 into early January 2022, that first Bungee Breakers feature established his role in a crew built around bungee-assisted run-ins, rail spots and fast-changing Scandinavian snow.

That work had a prior connection to CopenHill. Line x CopenHill, filmed in November 2021, put the dry-slope setting and Scum of Skiing at the centre of a film made by Skaarup and Ebskamp. The 2023 Bungee Breakers feature See You Soon expanded his job beyond a single director credit: he was credited for direction, cinematography alongside Mikkel Hjort-Pedersen and Anton Lisner, sound with Hjort-Pedersen, and graphics. Those credits point to a hands-on production role in a scene where street footage depends on lenses, fast resets, available light and access as much as the skier’s trick.

With The League (2024), the scale changed from a Danish crew film to a documentary about the origins of Jib League. Skaarup directed the Holocene Studios project, co-edited it and held the post-production supervisor credit. The film follows Ferdinand Dahl, James Woods and Øystein Bråten as they develop an alternative European freeski event. Skaarup’s confirmed contribution to skiing is therefore creative: building narratives around urban rail sessions, dry-slope culture and rider-led competition rather than fronting a personal contest résumé.
