Ryan Brueninghaus

Hometown: Superior, Wisconsin | Active: 2019-present | Known for: Big Mess of Homies and UMF freeski | Disciplines: street skiing, park skiing, slopestyle, rail skiing

Ryan Brueninghaus grew up in Superior, Wisconsin before becoming part of Maine's independent park and street-ski scene. His public skiing developed through North Coast videos, Sugarloaf and Sunday River park sessions, and later the University of Maine at Farmington freeski programme. Rather than following a World Cup pathway, Brueninghaus combined collegiate competition with crew filming and street skiing, eventually appearing in one of North Coast's largest full-length projects.

Superior beginnings lead east to Maine

Brueninghaus is from Superior, Wisconsin, a hometown confirmed by both university and USASA records. After moving east, he enrolled at the University of Maine at Farmington and became part of its ski and snowboard programme. His move placed him close to Sugarloaf and the wider Maine park community, where independent filming became an important part of his skiing alongside structured collegiate competition.

North Coast 2019: park edits build profile

One of Brueninghaus' earliest clearly dated ski appearances is DRIVE-BY, filmed at Sunday River in 2019. He continued appearing in North Coast projects including In the 207, which combined spring footage from Sugarloaf, Sunday River and Titcomb, and MASKED UP FISHEYE at Sugarloaf. These edits documented a style centred on rails, park features and repeated filming with riders including Rowan Stamp, Ben Amburgey and Sam Scheff.

Farmington freeski reaches national championships

Brueninghaus also competed for the University of Maine at Farmington. Activity Maine records Ryan Brueninghaus, Samuel Scheff and Carson Theriault finishing sixth in the men's freeski team combined at the USCSA National Championships, at the time the best men's freeski national performance in UMF history. In December 2022, Brueninghaus also won the Freeski Open Class men's rail jam at Sunday River in the USASA Maine Mountain Series.

North Coast 2021: Big Mess goes full-length

Brueninghaus' strongest film credit is Big Mess of Homies, released by North Coast in November 2021. The crew described the film as a street project assembled from footage produced by Maine skiers because the local scene was relatively isolated from the rest of the East Coast. Brueninghaus appeared alongside Kyle Bell, Sam Scheff, Rowan Stamp, his brother Sean Brueninghaus, Carson Theriault, Ben Amburgey, Tommy Cogswell and other riders.

Surface 2023: skiing continues beyond college

Surface Skis listed Brueninghaus among its AM-BASSADORS in 2023, alongside Kyle Bell and other developing riders. That same year he completed a B.A. in Outdoor Recreation Business Administration at UMF. His last clearly documented ski activity found in this research remains connected to the Maine freeski scene, university competition and independent crew filming rather than international contest skiing.
