Freeride DM 2024 took place in Fieberbrunn, Austria from February 26 to 29 | Disciplines: ski and snowboard women and men | Notable winners: Emma SĂžgaard Ledet and Tobias Kronborg | Format: Danish national freeride championship on the Wildseeloder face
Freeride DM 2024 brought Denmark's ski and snowboard freeride community to Fieberbrunn, Austria, from February 26 to 29. The championship used the Wildseeloder terrain above the Pillerseetal, a mountain zone known for steep and complex freeride lines. Around 60 riders registered for the week, joining an event that had returned to Fieberbrunn every winter since 2017. The schedule began with registration and a compulsory riders meeting, then moved through equipment testing, clinics and freeride preparation before the main competition day.
The competitive program separated riders into Ski Women, Ski Men, Snowboard Women and Snowboard Men. Weather delayed the decisive day until Thursday, when the safety team had completed avalanche-control work and conditions opened on Wildseeloder. It was a freeride contest rather than a park event: competitors chose individual lines down a natural face, balancing route selection, control, fluidity and airborne moves. Earlier in the week, the program included a Spot din Line clinic with Josephine LĂŒtzau and Christian Emil Thorup, while Bungee Breakers assisted with the Jarritos backcountry-kicker sessions.
The closest ski decision came in the women's field. Emma SĂžgaard Ledet took first place by a single point over Lea Kronborg, with Mette Lund Piil third. In Ski Men, Tobias Kronborg won ahead of Kristian Juul-Kristensen and Jonas NĂžrremark Gram-Nielsen. The result report also noted Carl Schmidt-Svejstrup's late-run binding release after his final drop, a moment that removed the previous winner from the top positions. Those runs unfolded in changing snow, with thawing lower on the face and colder conditions higher up.
Malou Gundersen won Snowboard Women, followed by Maja Frederiksen and Marie Cancel. Oscar Helmersen led Snowboard Men, with Sander Bregendahl-Rafn second and Patrick Bessert third. The four podiums framed an event built as much around the Danish riding community as the national titles. Riders.dk published coverage from the trip and reported workshops, guided freeride groups and off-mountain gatherings alongside the race.
Fresh snowfall gave the face its needed depth but did not make it simple. Temperatures near freezing made sections of the snow heavy, while sun and cloud changed its character through the descent. The Wildseeloder summit stands at 2,119 metres, and the organisers carried out controlled avalanche releases before allowing competition to proceed. Fieberbrunn hosts the Danish championships alongside its Freeride World Tour history, but the 2024 edition was defined by its Danish field, four national titles and a delayed race day that finally opened on Thursday.
