Snowbasin Closes The Three Stop Winter Dew Tour

The Winter Dew Tour reached Snowbasin Resort in Utah from February 9 to 12 2012 for the third and final stop of the season. Freeski superpipe qualification set the field before the men's and women's finals on February 11, with both individual Snowbasin victories and season-long Dew Cups at stake. The halfpipe contest arrived shortly after Winter X Games Aspen and brought many of the same leading skiers back into direct competition, including David Wise, Kevin Rolland, Torin Yater-Wallace, Simon Dumont, Thomas Krief, Devin Logan, Rosalind Groenewoud and Maddie Bowman.

Snowbasin's pipe was unusually long for the period, giving the finalists enough transition to build complete runs around repeated amplitude and difficult doubles rather than one isolated trick. The men's field produced five scores above 90 points, while the women's final became decisive for a Dew Cup race that had developed across Breckenridge, Killington and Snowbasin.

David Wise Puts 94.50 On The First Run

David Wise took control of the men's final with his opening run. He started with a switch double cork 1080, then linked a right 900, left 900, alley-oop 540 tail grab and a double cork 1260 at the bottom of the pipe. The run scored 94.50 and remained unbeaten through the second round. Wise then attempted his first 1440 in halfpipe competition on run two but failed to ride away, leaving his first score to decide the contest.

Kevin Rolland applied the closest pressure with 93.00. The French skier entered Snowbasin leading the overall Dew Tour standings, and second place gave him enough points to retain that advantage and secure the men's Freeski Superpipe Dew Cup. Yater-Wallace completed the event podium only 0.25 points behind Rolland with 92.75, his third consecutive Dew Tour podium of the season.

Five Riders Break Ninety In The Men's Final

The podium margin only showed part of the depth at Snowbasin. Simon Dumont finished fourth with 91.75 and Thomas Krief took fifth with 90.75, putting the top five within 3.75 points. Antti-Jussi Kemppainen followed on 86.25, Mike Riddle scored 83.75 and Tucker Perkins placed eighth with 78.00. Jossi Wells recorded 76.75 for ninth and Gus Kenworthy completed the top ten at 75.00.

The result also separated the event winner from the season champion. Wise had found strong form late in the winter and won Snowbasin, but Rolland's points collected across the full three-stop series left the Frenchman first in the final Dew Cup standings. Yater-Wallace finished second overall and Wise third, giving the season ranking a different order from the Snowbasin podium.

Devin Logan Converts 90.00 Into Two Trophies

Devin Logan entered the women's final with the chance to settle both the Snowbasin contest and the overall tour. Her winning run scored 90.00 and combined a Japan grab, 540 tail grab, flair, mute grab, alley-oop critical, 720 mute and switch alley-oop 540. The score opened a clear margin over Canadian Rosalind Groenewoud, who finished second with 82.50.

Maddie Bowman completed the podium with 80.00 after arriving in Utah as one of the strongest riders of the season. Anais Caradeux placed fourth on 70.00, Ayana Onozuka fifth with 67.25 and Brita Sigourney sixth on 54.50. Logan's victory simultaneously confirmed her as the women's Freeski Superpipe Dew Cup champion after a campaign built around repeated podium finishes.

Rolland And Logan Leave Utah With The Dew Cups

The season standings added another layer to the Snowbasin results. Rolland finished the men's Dew Cup campaign with 307 points, ahead of Yater-Wallace on 291 and Wise on 266. That order reflected consistency across the complete tour rather than the outcome of one final. Snowbasin nevertheless tightened the comparison between all three: Wise won the event, Rolland protected the championship lead and Yater-Wallace remained within a quarter point of second place.

Logan completed a different type of finish. She won both the Snowbasin final and the overall women's title, ending the Dew Cup standings ahead of Bowman and Groenewoud. Her season also included competition in slopestyle, underlining the multi-discipline role that several elite female freeskiers still carried during the early 2010s.

A Superpipe Final Between X Games And Sochi

The February 2012 contest landed during a rapid technical change in men's halfpipe skiing. Wise's switch double cork 1080 and closing double cork 1260, Yater-Wallace's double cork combinations and the attempted 1440 showed how quickly rotation difficulty was increasing. Snowbasin followed Winter X Games Aspen by only a short interval, so riders were carrying competition-ready runs directly from one major North American pipe to another.

The Olympic context was also beginning to reshape the discipline. Ski halfpipe had been approved for the Sochi 2014 programme, placing the Snowbasin field inside the first generation preparing to move from established freeski contests into Olympic qualification and selection systems. Wise, Rolland and Yater-Wallace would all remain central names in that transition, while Logan, Groenewoud and Bowman became leading figures on the women's side.

February 11 Leaves Two Different Men's Winners

Snowbasin 2012 finished with a useful distinction between one-night performance and season-long consistency. Wise owned the highest men's score at 94.50, but Rolland left Utah with the Dew Cup. Logan removed that distinction in the women's contest by winning the final with 90.00 and taking the overall title as well. Across the two superpipe finals, six podium positions went to the United States, France and Canada, while the men's top five were separated by fewer than four points.
