The Cardrona FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup halfpipe was contested on August 22 2012 at Cardrona Alpine Resort on New Zealand's South Island. Although staged during the Southern Hemisphere winter, the event belonged to the 2012-13 World Cup season and placed an international field into the Wells Pipe months before the main Northern Hemisphere competition calendar. The FIS men's result sheet recorded 36 competitors representing 14 nations, with 12 advancing from qualification to the final.
The pipe measured 165 metres in length and 18.5 metres from wall to wall, with 4.5 metre walls and a 17 degree inclination. Men's qualification began at 08:30 and the final started at 14:00. Conditions for the final were sunny, with an air temperature of 3 Celsius, snow temperature at 0 Celsius and a light northwesterly wind. Each finalist received two runs, with the better score determining the final ranking.
Torin Yater-Wallace entered the men's final after qualifying near the front of the field and immediately established a strong mark of 87.0 on his first run. Thomas Krief answered with 90.0, putting the French skier into the lead after the opening attempts. Yater-Wallace then raised the level on run two. The five judges scored that second pass 92, 92, 95, 92 and 94, producing a final score of 93.0 and moving the American ahead by three points.

Bronze: Benoit Valentin (FRA) with 84.2
Benoit Valentin completed the podium with 84.2 from his first run. Antti-Jussi Kemppainen recovered from a 10.0 opening attempt to score 81.4 on run two and finish fourth. Christian Allen placed fifth with 78.6, Walter Wood sixth with 76.4 and local skier Jossi Wells seventh with 71.2. The final therefore combined an American victory with two French podium positions and a New Zealand presence inside the top seven.
The women's competition produced a different national pattern. Devin Logan won with 83.2, taking the first women's halfpipe World Cup victory of the 2012-13 campaign. Japan filled the next two positions: Manami Mitsuboshi scored 80.0 for second and Ayana Onozuka reached 78.6 for third. New Zealand's Janina Kuzma finished fourth with 76.6, followed by Mirjam Jaeger of Switzerland on 73.2 and Katrien Aerts of Belgium on 72.2.

The women's field contained 27 ranked competitors in the official results. Several names would remain visible through the following Olympic cycle, including Onozuka, Virginie Faivre, Dara Howell, Tiril Sjaastad Christiansen and Rowan Cheshire. Cardrona therefore offered an early-season comparison between established pipe specialists and younger athletes developing toward the first Olympic ski halfpipe programme.
The men's score progression made the second run decisive. Krief's 90.0 from run one would have been enough to win if Yater-Wallace had not improved, while Valentin's 84.2 remained his best after a lower second attempt. Yater-Wallace was the only skier to break 90 after the first-round leader had been established, and his 93.0 created a three-point winning margin. Kemppainen's jump from 10.0 to 81.4 also showed the value of the two-run format, allowing a failed opening pass to be discarded completely.
The August 2012 World Cup sat inside a transitional period for competitive freeskiing. Ski halfpipe had already developed through X Games, specialist contests and earlier FIS events, but its Olympic debut was approaching at Sochi 2014. Cardrona brought many of that cycle's athletes together in a purpose-built Southern Hemisphere training environment before the winter schedule shifted toward North America and Europe.
Yater-Wallace left Cardrona with the men's victory at 93.0, Logan took the women's contest at 83.2, and France and Japan each placed two athletes across the six podium positions. The Wells Pipe dimensions, two-run final format and international start lists make the August 22 results a precise snapshot of World Cup halfpipe immediately before the discipline's first Olympic era.
