On 11 January 2020, Cody LaPlante moved through the rails and jumps of Font Romeu with one priority: keep the run clean. The American skier later described choosing the best run he could execute without mistakes, using the slopestyle course to connect his rail skiing with the jump section. The result came three winters after his first World Cup start and during a period when the Truckee skier was moving from junior events into regular international finals.
LaPlante grew up in Truckee, California, and first skied at Alpine Meadows when he was two. U.S. Ski & Snowboard describes park skiing as the discipline he followed from childhood, with the Olympic Valley Freestyle Team becoming his club. He joined the U.S. team in 2017, the same year his international FIS record expanded through junior events and his first senior World Cup season. His World Cup debut came at Stubai on 26 November 2017 in slopestyle.
At the 2018 Junior World Championships in Cardrona, LaPlante finished fourth in big air and tenth in slopestyle. The New Zealand results followed World Cup starts at Snowmass, Mammoth Mountain and Silvaplana during the same winter. Aspen also brought his first X Games slopestyle appearance, where the X Games record lists him 17th. The year placed junior championship, World Cup and X Games competition inside the same season before his eighteenth birthday.
LaPlante finished third in the Font Romeu World Cup slopestyle behind Mark Hendrickson and Jesper Tjäder. His final score was 83.45, with Andri Ragettli fourth. LaPlante said after the event that he had concentrated on putting down the cleanest version of the run he could. It remains the first World Cup podium recorded in his FIS career and helped him finish ninth in the 2019/20 slopestyle World Cup standings.
During the 2021/22 season, LaPlante finished seventh in the Tignes World Cup slopestyle. His winter also included 13th at Stubai, 13th in Steamboat big air, 14th at Font Romeu and 17th at Silvaplana. Those results followed a tenth-place slopestyle finish in Aspen in March 2021 and kept him consistently inside World Cup fields as the U.S. team prepared through another Olympic cycle.
The 2023 World Championships at Bakuriani used a 640-metre slopestyle course with three jump features and three jib sections. Training took place in windy weather before conditions improved for the final. LaPlante reached the men's slopestyle final and finished 13th, behind Valentin Morel and ahead of Jesper Tjäder. The same championship also put him into big air, while his World Cup season around it produced sixth at Laax, eighth at Tignes and ninth at Mammoth Mountain. Bakuriani's shifting wind made speed management a recurring issue across the championship course.
X Games Aspen returned LaPlante to a different type of feature in 2024. He finished fifth in Men's Ski Knuckle Huck, where riders used the rollover of the big-air jump for tricks judged on execution, difficulty, variety, progression, originality and style. Colby Stevenson won the event, with Henrik Harlaut and Jesper Tjäder also on the podium. The result became LaPlante's strongest X Games placing after his earlier slopestyle appearance in 2018.
LaPlante's 2024/25 World Cup season included ninth in big air at Klagenfurt before a seventh-place slopestyle finish at Tignes on 14 March 2025. The same winter took him through Chur, Beijing, Stubai, Laax, Aspen and Stoneham. U.S. Ski & Snowboard retained him on its 2025/26 Slopestyle & Big Air Pro Team with Alex Hall, Mac Forehand, Hunter Henderson, Troy Podmilsak, Konnor Ralph and Colby Stevenson.
LaPlante represented the United States at the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Livigno and finished fourth in men's freeski big air on 17 February. The Olympic result became the strongest championship placing found in his senior record. He continued competing after Livigno, with World Cup starts in Tignes and Silvaplana during March. His FIS profile remained active into the 2026/27 points lists, with rankings maintained in both slopestyle and big air.
