In March 2020, ski areas across North America shut their lifts as the COVID-19 pandemic reached the mountains. Nick Fromm was among a group of skiers who continued searching for snow away from normal resort operations. That period became the basis for an early Self-Taught Media project and pushed Fromm toward the backcountry-focused film work that would define his public ski profile over the next several winters.
Self-Taught 2020: lifts stop spinning
Fromm appeared in The Day The Lifts Stood Still, released in October 2020. The film followed skiers who continued riding after resort closures on March 14 and credited Fromm both among the riders and among the video contributors. Chris Johnson, Ian Smith, Gavin Goeler, Topher Newitt, Colton and Conor Carroll, Tristan Fountain and other skiers also appeared in the project.
Cascades 2021: Kook Patrol takes shape
Self-Taught returned the following year with Kook Patrol. Its trailer introduced the project as a ski-mountaineering film set in the American Cascades. The completed film shifted the group's focus farther from chairlifts and terrain parks, following Fromm, Chris Johnson, Mac Heffernan and Sam Burstein into backcountry terrain where touring, route choice and natural snow replaced resort laps.
Self-Taught 2021: four Bivy Boyz lead
Kook Patrol listed Fromm as one of its four starring skiers rather than a supporting appearance. Jan Wascycuk, Gavin Goeler, Ian Smith, Max Test and Dylan Gray filled additional roles around the core group. Self-Taught described the film as its second project and framed the crew as the Bivy Boyz, using the post-pandemic season to pursue skiing away from high-speed lifts and resort infrastructure.
Oregon 2021: Treefort supports Kook Patrol
The film also connected the crew to Pacific Northwest outdoor companies. Treefort Lifestyles, an Oregon-based outdoor-accessory company rooted in ski and snowboard culture, was one of the brands credited with supporting Kook Patrol. Avid Cider, Edge Rescue and Kinco Gloves were also listed by the production, reinforcing the regional and backcountry character of the project.
Self-Taught 2023: Bivy Boyz return
In October 2023, Self-Taught released Bivy Boyz: THE MOVIE. Fromm again appeared in the main four-person cast with Sam Burstein, Chris Johnson and Mac Heffernan, while Lex Carlton, Shaylee Ritter and Miller Martin were among the additional skiers. The repeat casting established Fromm as a continuing member of the Bivy Boyz rather than a one-film participant, extending his documented film career across multiple winters.
